Shankar works as a servant with wealthy Dwarkaprasad, who lives with his son, Vijay, and daughter, Asha. One day Shankar finds a young girl near a river bank, brings her home and names her Jyoti. Dwarkaprasad decides to pitch in and agrees to pay for her education along with Vijay and Asha. Years pass by, Vijay and Jyoti have grown up, are in love with each other, and would like to get married. When Dwarkaprasad finds out about this, he sends Vijay abroad to study, and asks Shankar and Jyoti to leave immediately. When Vijay returns home, he finds that Shankar and Jyoti are untraceable, when he does find her, she is in the company of a young child, who calls her "mommy". Vijay is heartbroken and decides to marry the girl of his fathers' choice, which is none other than Seema, the daughter of wealthy Kedarnath.
