Anna, a gifted young philosophy academic, arrives at a small Canadian university as a sessional lecturer. There she meets an older divorced professor, Ian MacGregor, and they quickly discover a mutual attraction. Executives at the university notice her skill at teaching and handling university politics, but have no funds to keep her on past the term's end.
