In 1759, during the 7 year war in Canada, French soldiers battled the English army for their territory. On July 23, general Amherst and his army of 11,000 headed up lake Champlain towards Fort Carillon. Upon their arrival, general François de Bourlamaque and his contingent of 2,000 men, realizing that they were outnumbered, abandoned their defense and fled in small groups towards New France.
