As time unfolds backwards through 19-year-old Freddy's pregnancy, we see that Freddy has slowly dropped her role as surrogate parent to irresponsible Petra, her 35-year-old mother, as Petra has gradually become more maternal. In addition, the baby's father, 26-year-old Googie has been transformed from carefree boy to responsible father. We also discover that Googie was originally Petra's boyfriend. As time further unspools, we also learn the extraordinary circumstances in which Freddy and Googie initially conceived the baby and became a couple.
