(2005)
A visual and verbal palindrome, this short black-and-white noir uses the same footage (played forward, then in reverse) to tell two opposing stories. The first is a love story, emerging from darkness and hurtling toward a romantic meeting that climaxes in a kiss. The second story, though seamlessly connected, begins where the first ends, starting from the kiss and spiraling back toward darkness. It is thus possible to derive from the footage three separate stories: the love story of the first half, the tragedy of the second half, and the doomed romance of the whole. At once a stirring mood piece and a highly disciplined examination of the impact of movement, this palindromic ode to classic noir offers a uniquely new perspective on narrative cinema.
