Karl's experiment with self-inflicted pain leads to his inadvertent martyrdom when his insomniac neighbour, Clint, enters his life. Seeing the answer to the end of universal suffering in Karl's desperate act, Clint, aided by Estella, an equally disturbed building resident, tries to spread Karl's "message" to others.
