Since her divorce nurse Abbey lives alone with her 6 years old son Willie. Her ex-husband Ted may have Willie every second weekend. But when Ted marries Clare, who has two children herself, he wants to see Willie more and more often. At first Abbey welcomes this, because it leaves her time for her career. But when she sees that Willie suffers from the situation and wants to reduce the time Willie spends with Ted's family, he decides that he wants care and custody - and goes to court. She objects to every-other weekend visitation, and flatly refuses to allow the son to spend afternoons at his Dad's, even though she is at work during this time and the child is in day-care. She also resists any input from the Dad on their son's upbringing, calling him "controlling." Faced with the inability to cooperate on raising the son that is his, too, the Dad sues for custody.
