Francis McGowan's acting career has gone downhill since the series Anchors Aweigh ended. He decides to leave his wife and two children behind to return to his hometown for a while. There he wants to sort out his father belongings, who died six months ago, and sell the parental house. While Francis tries to avoid his nosy neighbor Duane Hopwood, he meets Lucy Bammer, who works as a guide at a giant wooden elephant called Lucy and still lives at home with her blind mother.
