Finding a western with a plot that been used several times before, no matter if it was an "A" using a "B" plot or vice versa, is not surprising but finding two such films released in the same year within a few months of each other is not all that common. The basic plot of this film, with Randolph Scott, and "The Forty-Niners", with Bill Elliott,is that of a lawman hired to find three "names-unknown" outlaws, and his search leads him to a town where the town's three leading citizens are the searched-for culprits, although a woman makes up part of the trio in "The Bounty Hunter." The Scott film was finished first and had the lowest PCA number (16703 to 16874 for the Elliott film) but was released five months later, proving only that Warners had more product and could keep it "in inventory" longer, whereas Allied Artists released films as soon as they were finished. And sometimes before. The dates would indicate that Winston Miller was careless with his material and is owed money for writing the (uncredited) original for "The Forty-Niners." The Scott version, color and budget aside, is better because it has Marie Windsor and Kathy Marlowe sizzling up the saloon scenes and Dolores Dorn as the good girl. The plot-hole in both films is that the culprits moved in and took over a town with amazing speed.
