She begins to awaken. She's alive. A look of horror consumes her as her eyes find him. He drops to his knees and starts working as if it's a monumental task, then stops. He stands up and takes a moment to appreciate his effort before casually walking away. DETECTIVE JONATHAN WELLS (50), a twenty-five year veteran, arrives on the scene. He is met by a particularly gruesome sight; he stands frozen in awe. He's never seen anything like this. The unidentified girl, left mutilated, and next to her, pieces of other victims. He studies the crime scene and quickly realizes that a puzzle has been left for the police to solve; the victim is only one of the pieces. At that moment DETECTIVE ANTHONY YOUNG (35), an Ivy League type, appears. Although he's use to all kinds of homicides, nothing has prepared him for this. He stands paralyzed. Wells helps him gain his composure and they begin to dissect the crime scene. They find a tremendous amount of evidence; which at first takes them aback. They soon realize that he's challenging them. It's not long before they solve the puzzle and realize what he's doing, leaving the address of his next victims hidden in the puzzle. He's inviting detectives to find him or more bodies. The puzzles get solved and it seems they're getting closer, but always arrive a step behind. The tension mounts and the city is now gripped with fear, a serial killer on the loose is bad enough, but this one's like the grim reaper. The death of the young girl has affected Wells; she reminds him of his estranged daughter. This awakens his need to reconcile with her. A task which seems impossible, but after confiding in an old friend he is determined to re-establish their relationship. As the body count rises Wells is pulled back into the case. They go back and carefully study his methods and discover one of the clues is directing them to a victim's telephone. They locate the phone and in an inspired moment, Wells hits the redial button. It rings. Then the receiver is heard being knocked off the phone. The voice heard sends chills across his face. It sounds like a deaf person crying out for help. They quickly get the address to the phone number thru dispatch and race to the house. They are met by a disturbing sight, a man horribly disfigured, but alive. At that moment Wells's cell phone rings. It's his ex-wife. The blood drains from his face. This is not happening. His daughter has gone missing. It's not long before they realize his daughter is the next victim. Wells is now directly involved. The Chief wants him off and has already called F.B.I. profilers for help. Wells pleads his case and the Chief finally relents. He has twenty-four hours before they take over. Wells and Young soon become aware that the killer also has left in the clues the answer to the biggest mystery of all...his identity. Will they find out who he is? As time runs down, the final puzzle, which leads to his daughter, waits to be solved. They race to decode the riddle, but nobody is prepared for the surprise he has in store. Written by Rzwan Cabani
