Divine Forces Synopsis SALVADOR (50's), an Angelino-Mexican landscaper, who is still grieving the loss of his wife, has been living a simple life in East LA for more than 25 years. MEMO, his only son and the pride of the barrio, is serving in the war in Iraq. Salvador feels proud of having his only son defending his country. He belongs to a patriotic community of Chicanos, who strongly believe that the war against terrorism is the right thing to do. Inexplicably, the radio in Salvador's truck keeps shifting from the usual "ranchero" music to a man's inquisitive voice. It's the voice of ROBERT GOODMAN (40's), a controversial talk-radio host from a local station in Los Angeles. Robert, original from the East Coast (the Bronx), carries with profound passion his extremely polemical and politically incorrect points of view on the world news. An enigmatic homeless, wheelchair-bound, Vietnam Vet, observes Salvador's life from a distance. As he crosses his path, we realize that LATRELL is no ordinary man, and their meeting is no mere coincidence. One day, two military personnel firmly knock on Salvador's door; he prepares for the worst. He barely asks, "Where's the flag?" The two men, with a dry expression in front of him respond, "There is no flag for deserters". Blood drains from Salvador's face. He wonders where his son might be, how he will be, and mainly, how he will possible explain this to his patriotic community. Roberts's daughter, SARAH, after many years of drug abuse, accidentally comes back to her father's life searching for his blessings. A look of disappointment envelopes Robert. Sarah is committed to make his father's life miserable; she accuses him of being so busy "radio-talking" with the world, but didn't find time to speak with his own daughter. A mysterious letter arrives in Salvador's mail. It is from his son, and what it contains is too shocking for his father to fathom: "the other side of the war". He buries the letter under a lifeless, blue jacaranda tree in his backyard. Salvador meets Robert, who aggressively challenges him to bring the letter to the surface, for his own benefit. Robert becomes a catalyst to a journey that will bring both, contradiction and consciousness to Salvador's life. The fates conspire to challenge Salvador, Robert, Latrell, Memo and Sarah. As the "divine forces" bring to the light what has been buried, Salvador and Robert begin to leave behind their fears and denial. Ultimately, Truth and Nonviolence, transcends race, politics, religion and borders.
